Iowa DNR keeps an eye out for rabbit disease

AMES, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is on the lookout for a virus impacting native rabbit populations in several states throughout the U.S.

The latest strain of the rabbit disease, RHVD2, is not in Iowa yet, and State Wildlife Veterinarian Dr. Rachel Ruden told KXCV/KRNW that they would like to keep it that way.

Ruden emphasizes that the virus is not known to affect other animals and does not affect people. If you see any unusual mortality, such as clusters of dead rabbits with no signs of external trauma, you're urged to contact the DNR.
